Title: Movies this year...
Post by: Sinnybuns/Mika on May 10, 2009, 01:31:07 AM
Okay, so I just got back from the movies and I want to know what you guys are looking forward to seeing/have seen this year!

I just saw Star Trek and was blown away at how good it was.  Yes, I'm a trekkie.  You'll just have to forgive me for that.  It was DAMN good with a very solid story.  That and a cameo role by Leonard Nimoy.  :P  I'm smitten.  Honestly, I thought the movie was better than X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

May is just a very good month for movies.  ;)

Wolverine, Star Trek, Angels and Demons, and Terminator: Salvation are on my must see list for this year, as well as Transformers 2.

I also just saw the preview for GI Joe.  Looks very interesting!

So tell me your thoughts!

I saw X-Men Origins and loved it. if only for the fact they FINALLY put Gambit in the movie and I'm a self confessed Gambit Mark lol.

I've not seen the new Star Trek but plan to on friday since I'm actually off of work. Walmart FINALLY gives me a friday off it's a miracle. I look forward to seeing it as from the previews it looks awesome. Angels and Demons should be great as I loved the book and any movie or book that debunks Christianity and it's flaws is good. Salvation I don't know yet... will give it a look as I've not seen the previews for it as of yet.

I was dissapointed by wolverine, mostly because im a deadpool fan and they just ruined that aspect of the movie, also in general the plot twists and such in the second half of the movie sucked the life out of it for me.  I preferred it when it was a revenge western stule movie and not some elaborate lets put every cameo in for no reason at all conspiracy movie.

I am looking forward to Star Trek tho.  I actually hate Star Trek.  I am a huge sci-fi fan but ive always found star trek to be awfully dull.  That said, the reviews are outstanding, and I hated the original BSG but the reboot of it is my favorite thing ever now (hence the pic base), so I feel like I could give this a shot.

Transformers 2 because well, Giant robots.

I'm also interested in Angels and Demons, when i read the books back in high school i always thought it would make a better movie than da vinci code, i want to see if i was right.

and of course, pixar's new movie, UP, because Pixar ia amazing.

I'm definitely looking forward to Up as well... I love Pixar!

Next on the docket for us will be Terminator: Salvation. I also want to see Little Ashes (but probably will have to DL that since it's going to be a limited run... movies about Salvador Dali are always awesome).

Also... upcoming later in the summer... H2... fuck yeah, Rob Zombie movie!!!

And 9. Saw the trailer with Star Trek... looks FREAKING AWESOME! I love those post-apocalyptic kinda stories, and this one looks both weird, and just sci-fi enough for me. :) Plus the trailer had Coheed and Cambia's Welcome Home in it... so, it's gotta be good!!!

9 doesn't come out till sept (9/9/09), but im looking forward to it as well, the short film its based off of is great, and tim burton has faith enough in the director to basically support him all the way, and thats a good enough endorsement for me.

The hangover looks pretty funny because its got Andy Bernard from the office an the most under rated comedian in the world Zach Galifinakis. The only thing is, i hope it doesnt steal any thunder from I hope they serve beer in hell, the tucker max movie, coming out in September.

Crank 2 = win

Star Trek = Not the best film ever, but the best Star Trek film...
GI Joe = imminent win
Transformers 2 = imminent win

I grew up loving adam sandler as a kid, and as he started making more family based movies i switched over to becoming a huge fan of the whole judd apatow "Dick Flick" phenomenon, so i am quite interested in funny people. Sandler, Rogen, and Jonah hill so that is going to be a must see for me. Also, Jack Black and Michael Sera together in the movie "Year One" looks very monty pithon life of brian inspired and i will give that a watch too. I love Michael sera's awkward brand of teen comedy.

I am a big comedy guy so those will be movies that i not only go see in the theatres, but also buy for my collection.

And transformers 2 but thats a no brainer.

Star Trek was infinitely better than Wolverine, which bordered on disaster by the end of the movie!  and this is coming from someone who genuinely hates the original star trek series!

I couldn't disagree more. Sabretooth alone is more awesome than the entire Enterprise crew.

I will at least agree that the casting of origins was well done (except of course for will.i.am), but that script...ugh, atrocious.  Let's set up a gritty western-esque revenge flick thats appropriate to the char (good start)...but then water it down with meaningless cameos the whole movie!  Then lets take the revenge aspect out and put in several plot twists that take away all my emotional investment in the characters!  Then to top it off, lets defile the character of deadpool for no reason at all!  that script was simply abysmal, the early parts of the movie and a few of the actors managed to keep it up above ground for a grade of C.

Star Trek on the other hand, I mean, shit, it fixes the original star trek's biggest problem early and often - lots of plot movement and much more action, and yet, they still managed to put in enough good char moments to get me invested anyway.  To top it off, the casting was freaking superb, Zach Quinto?  Awesome.  Simon Pegg?  Perfect.  Even pretty boy Chris Pine was funny and interesting as Kirk.  The plot was complex, but not overwrought.  The twist was set up well enough that it didnt suffer from the same problems as wolvie's movie, and it was incredibly engaging.  easily a grade A Sci-fi flick, and the first piece of Star Trek fiction I can actually get behind.  major props to JJ Abrams.

I've never ever ever been a fan of DeadPool, and probably never will be. It's like they sat back and thought... "Let's make a guy with Spidey's sense of humour but Punisher's weapons!" and it turned out to be the most over-rated POS ever. Seriously, the char sucks, IMHO. Besides, they kind of stuffed the cool Darth Maul-esque death with some lame add-on post-credits scene, so DP's not a-goner for good.

The movie did a good job of taking the best bits from the Origins book and filtering it through the movie universe to tie in a lot of loose ends etc and bring the two worlds much closer together. There's a few minor bugs that irritate me, but I've since heard there's due to be another Wolverine prequel set prior to X1 which has an opportunity to remedy all of that.

It did a good job. I found it both entertaining and engaging, and very clever.

Im about to blow shit up for some people.......

this years recent movies have been better than the past, yet hollywood still continues to destroy the original storylines that people know and grew to love. lets start with "The origins of Wolverine"

although a good action movie as theres never been a problem with action sequences in hollywood and violence, this movie blows just like the rest of the comic book remakes. the TRUE origin of wolverine is NOT gabriel logan tied up in some govt conspiracy but more of a scared and lost child hood. for those who may know, wolvering was born in the 19th entry during colonial times. his REAL name is James Teasing. now, all mutants go through a tramatic expierence before accumulating their powers much like magneto getting his as he witnessed his parents being thrown into an internment camp. young james actually got his healing powers when he first DIED. yes thats right he died. his family who was a rich, cotton field growing family had a family secret. mommy had sex with the gardner and care taker who happened to look exactly like todays modern wolverine, minus the claws. eventually the father found out and confronted the drunken care taker. after a hard fight, the care taker killed the rich "father" and decided to go on a killing spree. after forced to watch his family die, james was then killed and the care taker who names happened to be gabriel logan, killed himself. mystically, james awoke covred in blood with his new mutant powers of healing and ran off into the woods looking to escape a horrible and tragic massacre. eventually he found years later in a bar still sulking his loss and when asked his name, he replied "gabriel logan". a small teaser for those who wanna get the actual comic and read for yourself. the fact that gambit (who is one my my favs) was cameo'd into this movie was BS. why ruin a good story? to keep up with the times? it wasnt broken in the first place, so why fix it? 4

transformers 2, the first one sucked so why would the second be any better? plain and simple.  3

crank 2, awsome movie as much as the first and i usually dont like sequels but they did a good job with this one. the best part is thats its an original idea and thats something hollywood has been lacking the past few years. fucking remakes. 9

star trek, didnt see it but heard good things. im not a fan nor am i a trekkie but i heard it stook with the story so kudos. TBD

gi joe, again, why fix something that wasnt broken. i grew up loving gi joe and they decided to make itin modern day instead of during the cold war. wat a shame. it had better be good but i doubt it. TBD

terminator, why do they keep making sequels to this? so far it looks great and christian bale is awsome but the only 1 that was any good was the second. i hope this one takes the cake. TBD

angels and demons, supposed to be good but its more religious conspiracy crap. when will people learn that religion in general is complete bullshit? its just a form of control but people who have the power to do something. tom hanks does a great job as usual and overall it was pretty decent. ill give it a 7 1/2

natm, i love comedy and this was pretty good. ben stiller should star in every movie. 7

harry potter, looks good but i wouldnt rush to see it. TBD

dragon ball evolution, talk about total shit. anybody who is a DB fan will wanna kill themselves after this. goku at 18? he did all that stuff when he was 6/7 not 18. again hollywood takes something that awsome and funny and turns it into modern day fecal matter. directed by the same guy who fucked up "HULK",for those who remember hi being able to jump 5 miles at a time, they turn goku from a curious boy learning about the world into a unpopular punk teenager. huge mistake. the graphics were just as bad as the storyline. NOTHING about it was close to the original story. dont believe me? then why was it out for only a week? it sucked more balls then a 75 year old porn star who wont retire. now if you excuse me, theres a pair of wrists at the end of my arms that need to be slashed. 1

those were my thought so if ou dont like it, too bad. SUE ME!!

Saw Star Trek yesterday.  People actually die.  The story cleans up the whole mess of the original cannon.  And even though its from JJ Abrams I actually really enjoyed it.  Its been a while since I've seen 1 and 2, but of the remaining originally Trek films, this one tops them all easily.

Hollywood should learn by now--you don't turn a manga/anime into a live action movie  ::)

X-men Wolverine = epic fail. Not only did Wolverine's CG blades look to fake that the entire movie theater I was in during the midnight release burst into laughter--but since when does a cajun based character have a southern accent? Hate to break it to them but those are 2 completely different accents considering I live in Louisiana. PG 13 or not--there was like no blood save for a few parts. There's more blood on The CW in the show Supernatural than there was in that movie lol.

I have faith in Transformers and Michael "B-B-B-Blosion" Bay but I tire of movies that have a great plot and great acting but I drowned out by all the special effects. Either way if its suckage I'm gonna cry a little inside.

GI Joe looks cool but opening trailer looked like Bioshock--the new suits look like they fell straight out of Halo lolz...I shall keep my fingers crossed on this one.

Star Trek was so awesome it outranked every other movie made this summer so far. I'm not a trekkie--but I'm a nerd and OMG I think I wet myself a little. The casting was done perfectly--the movie made sense considering the explanation of the alternate reality and it had so much stuff from the original series it was a win all around for hardcore fans and for people who just wanted to see the movie. My only complaint was that it ended :(

Terminator I don't have much of an opinion on given I never saw 3 and I haven't watched the other two since I was a kid. But, due to my boyfriend being a complete geek over terminator I shall be watching it lol.

Harry Potter--well, I've read all the books and seen the other movies--might as well keep at it.

Anything I missed--eh...I'll add later

That is a highly inaccurate description of deadpool.  Deadpool and spidey's sense of humor differ greatly for one thing.  Deadpool's humor is a lot darker most of the time (though he can be a bit zany/wacky as well), and he is defined more by insane comments than smart-ass quips.  He also breaks the fourth wall constantly as part of his char (my personal fav moment being when he broke into marvel studios in one comment to find out where the writer hid his enemy for that issue, hilarious), and uses that as part of his commentary.  your analysis also ignores the really tragic origins of the char, one of the most interesting origins in all of comics IMO.  A former soldier/cancer patient signs up for Weapon X program because he's terminal anyway and then the process ends up keeping alive but also permanently decaying with cancer, driving him mad in teh process.  I find that fascinating.  Now, yes, his weapons are similar to Punisher, but weapons only make a break a character for a reader (unless he's a child, hence wolverine's popularity with the young crowd - "HE HAS CLAWS! AND HE'S SUPER INVINCIBLE!"   Not that that's a bad thing, just somewhat funny and interesting, also i am now way off track, ahem) and if we took every char who uses swords and guns and immediately called him a Punisher rip-off....you get the idea (also Punisher?  most overrated char in comics, even moreso than Wolvie himself or even Venom).

Bah, but anyways, back on the topic of the movie itself.  Clearly, we were looking for different things in that movie, because the last thing I wanted was a serious link to the comic origin books (which were mediocre as hell), but something that worked as a solid movie itself and invested me further in specific characters.  I was feeling good about the movie until around the time we ran into Gambit.  The cameos were getting out of hand, taking away from the plot itself, and then the twists at the end and adding in a useless emma frost, randomly tying her to silver fox (who's a mutant?  Why? wasnt she just a mercenary/assassin in the books?) and tying silver fox into a conspiracy which was working way better as a "they killed his wife to get him to do weapon x" story.  It sucked the life out of it.  I left the theatre with a bad taste in my mouth.

To be fair, i am not such a big fan of the X-books in general.  I think they do a lot of things wrong.  But i really liked the first two x movies.  I also am no longer looking forward to any more x-movies from fox tho, i wish marvel could take the license back and do a reboot to fit into their Iron Man/Hulk movie-verse now.  *sigh* if only.

b4 i forget, wolverine's claws were a side effect where as the movie depicted it as something they wanted. later on when magneto rips his skeleton out, his claws are so part of his body that the metal gets replaced with bone claws. awsome.
Title: Re: Movies this year...
Post by: Osbourne Kilminster on May 13, 2009, 05:38:57 PM
Wolverine always had bone claws. They were first revealed when Magneto tore out the adamantium, but in the Origins books (which are set WAY prior to his debut in The Incredible Hulk books), he had them.

Re: Deadpool - I absolutely HATE that 4th wall rubbish. Each to their own, but things like that diminish the integrity of the Marvel Universe, IMHO.
