After some X-discussion in the movie thread, I thought it'd be cool to start up a Comics thread.  Both superhero and non-superhero.  I am a major comics enthusiast myself.  I actually wrote papers on both Batman (Miller's versions) and Preacher by Garth  Ennis this semester.  I find myself always pushing to get other kids and profs to accept comics as potentially serious fiction as well.  I'm fighting the fight so comics and us readers can get some respect (deserved or not, haha).

Anyways, what are some of your favorites?  as for me:

Writers? - Frank Miller, Alan Moore, Garth Ennis, neil gaiman, jeph loeb, peter david (tho he's kinda hit or miss), Brian K. Vaughn, Grant morrison.

Series/Books? - Preacher, Sandman, Y: The Last man, Watchmen, Batman - dark knight returns, year one, long halloween, arkham asylum.  Spiderman - nineties stuff, basically what i read as a kid, Kingdom Come.

Characters - Batman (duh), Riddler, Bane, Joker, Spiderman, Doc Octopus, Norman Osbourn, Deadpool, magneto, rorschach, doc manhattan, Jesse Custer, Tulip, Cassidy, Saint of Killers, Death, Dream, destruction, Yorick (Y:the last man).

how about you guys?

Okay...well, I was a hardcore comics reader when I was oh...8.

I had an uncle who was a Marvel encyclopedia.  He inspired my love of Marvel.  :D  But yeah...nowadays, I tend to stick with things I really like.

Like the new Thor series J. Michael Straczynski is doing.  Awesome stuff there.  I've checked out some of his other stuff and was really liking it.  Except Spiderman.

I HATE Spiderman.  I hate the Spiderman movies (except for Bruce Campbell.  Always much <3 for Bruce).

I've always loved Batman, especially Frank Miller's writing.

Sin City, hell, anything by Frank is good in my book.

I reread the Watchmen before the movie and decided I liked the movie better.

The Anita Blake comics have turned out to be especially good.  :)  LKH puts a lot of time and effort into making sure the transition from novel to comic is awesome.

Ermmm...

I'll post more as I think about it.

While I agree that the Watchmen movie was well done, I'd still say it isn't in the same league as the original comic.

I never been a big fan of anita blake, but i am a rather large dresden files fan which is similar and they just released a comics prequel last year that was well done.  They're adapting the novels next and i'm excited.

The Spiderman hatred is disappointing though.  Spidey and Bats made up all of my comic-reading until high school, when i started to branch out from superheroes.

speaking of non-superhero stuff, Daniel Clowes and Art Spiegelman are some other great writers I forgot.  they wrote Ghost World and Maus, respectively, both excellent books.  I also met Spiegelman when he gave a great presentation at my school, pretty awesome dude.

...recently read the "Buddha" series by Tezuka, excellent stuff, even though i dont usually read manga.

Shane Sanders

I'll check it out next time I go pick one up :). I've just recently gotten into reading it myself--I usually just watched the anime and skipped the manga but a lot of them are actually well written. I'd highly recommend Neon Genesis Evangelion if you ever find yourself looking for something to read on a rainy day. The anime is very good too if you'd rather just watch.

Spiral

I don't read any of the mainstream stuff really.  Not a big "superhero" fan.

Punisher MAX
The Boys
Fables

Those are the ones that I currently invest in.

Past books?  Transmetropolitan. Sin City.  My awesome Absolute Watchmen.  V for Vendetta. Preacher.

Parker Crosby

I totally guessed you would like The Boys! Just seemed like it.

I like DMZ, Y: The Last Man, Fables, Watchmen, Sandman, Hellblazer, and the current Marvel storylines are pretty badass. Not a big fan of DC, Marvel I feel like I can relate too more. Just read Blankets too, and while its not kick ass, its a great story of growing up.

I'm sure I am forgetting something. Anyway, there ya go.

The Reckoner

i have been meaning to pick up a copy of ghost world. I forget why though.

Boys is awesome.  Basically makes fun of everything I hate about your average comic book.

Indeed, Garth Ennis is known for his hatred of superheroes.  Preacher still remains as one of the greatest comic series every written.  I feel like I need to start reading the Boys, but Im currently broke.
